Relaxation Ideas

What is Relaxation?

In common terminology, relaxation means that we leave ourselves free of tension. Relaxing mind may mean that the mind is not under stress or active. In today’s lifestyle, this looks difficult. Isn’t it?

Now a days, most of us believe to be being under stress during most of the week and relax only on the weekends. This is considered the common way of life. Is this the right way of living? Is living a relaxed life all the time not our right? Let us reclaim it.

Bad stress -

If you ask anyone that why is he/she under stress most of the week, what answer do you expect to get? I have so much work to do, deadlines to meet, tasks to be completed, prepare for the new launch etc. Don’t you think that something like this will be the response?

Let us discuss why most of us are stressed all the time. At some time in our life, while we are chasing the dreams we lose our habit of sitting back and reflecting. We begin giving auto responses. If we are held up in a traffic jam, our response is – either to worry about the work ahead, or blame the system or some such negative thought. Not many of us think – All right. If the traffic is not moving, let me relax, listen to some good music, or go back to some childhood memories, remember good friends, let me make the best use of the time to relax and enjoy life. Not many of us respond in this way. We respond in stressed way whenever we come across any similar situation. This habit is taking a big toll on our quality of life.

Stress – A way of life.

We have taken stress as a way of life. Very few of us think about why they are trying to work at such a hectic pace and if ultimately, we are going to leave this world with a lot of incomplete work, why not at least work in a relaxed way? What is the use of working so much , if we kill all the joy. In search of a better tomorrow, we kill the present. Isn’t it?

Stressed work environment, stressed family life, no time to just walk around doing nothing but watch the nature…Why? It is as if we want to achieve most in the shortest possible time and therefore have no time to relax Working non-stop all the week is a way of life for a large majority. The increase in cardiac attacks, depression etc, are all the results of this stressed lifestyle. When we get stressed, we look around for the latest stress busters, latest therapies, etc. to counter the stress.

And then by the time the week ends, we again go out somewhere to relax. Sometimes holidays also tire, don’t they?

Why not lead a relaxed life all through the week?

Why not work in a relaxed frame of mind? Why get stressed?

Reflection about our own life is very essential if we want to reclaim our right to live peacefully. Will it help, if we bring some beautiful scenes of nature on our computers? Will it help, if we find time to watch a butterfly flying on our screens? The beauty of a colorful flower. Can it make us little relaxed?

If your answer is yes, download screensavers and find time to watch them whenever you find time while working. Look at them, wonder about the beauty of nature, think of their perfection and just relax.

Classical Music Reduces Stress – The Easy Way to Recharge Your Brain And Relax Your Mind

By Tania Gabrielle French

The scientific evidence is growing by leaps and bounds: music helps physical changes which help heal the body. Find out how to relax and rejuvenate using the calming sounds of classical music.

“The physiological benefits have been measured. Music reduces blood pressure, the heart rate, and hormones related to stress.” – Dr Rosalia Staricoff, London, England

Your brain is a 3 pound supercomputer. It’s the command center of your life and is involved in everything you do.

It is more complex than any computer we can imagine.

You have 100 billion nerve cells in your brain and every one of them connects to other nerve cells. Did you know that your brain has more connections in it than there are stars in the universe?

Just like your computer needs optimizing by clearing out unwanted clutter, your brain does too. When you optimize your brain regularly, you become the best you can be at any task – relationships, leisure, sports, creative thinking.

The first step to optimizing your brain is to protect it. From sleep deprivation. From injury. From pollution. And especially – from stress.

For example, many chemicals are toxic to your brain. Alcohol, drugs, nicotine, much caffeine, and many medications decrease blood flow to the brain. When blood flow decreases, your brain can’t work efficiently.

A UCLA study showed that cocaine addicts had 23% less overall blood flow compared to the drug free group. There’s more. When they measured cocaine addicts who also smoked cigarettes, blood flow dropped to 45% less. Chronic marijuana users had a whopping 85% less activity in their temporal lobes. Those lobes oversee memory and mood stability.

Same goes with sleep deprivation. If you sleep less than 8 hours a day on a consistent basis your brain will have less activity.

Stress is one of the greatest limiters to how well your brain functions. The hormones created while you’re under stress are VERY toxic to your memory centers. In fact, brain cells actually DIE with prolonged stress!

That’s why scientists are realizing that managing stress effectively is absolutely Crucial to good brain function.

Want a healthy, happy life? In a nutshell, reduce stress.

Thing is, it’s hard to avoid stress completely. So, getting de-stressed and de-compressed the easy way is essential. High frequency classical music has been proven to do just that. What makes taking a dose of it a day so easy is that you can play it in the background while you’re working, playing or sleeping.

It’s the easy-does-it remedy for stress-elimination.

The great things in life, like exercising, relax and recharge At The Same Time. That’s the difference between caffeine and high frequency music – the soft drinks and coffee give you an artificial high followed by a low. The music gives you a natural high plus relaxation and no negative, unhealthy side effects.

Stop filling up your low energy moments with toxins. Listen to classical music and have your brain fully optimized in no time!

Using Nature For Relaxation and Mood Boosters

Everyone gets a little down from time to time, but you can avoid letting that control you. Nature is one of the best mood boosters available. The beauty of your surroundings can help you feel happy and relax you. Focus on the cycle of life and the beauty of your surroundings.

Go outside and take a deep breath. Enjoy the smell of plants and flowers. Stare into the sky and listen to the chirp of the birds in the trees. All of those things are excellent ways to feel better. Live in a city? If you feel like you’re surrounded by concrete and glass, it can be hard to feel peaceful. But there’s almost certainly a city park within a short driving distance from your home where you can take the time to look for the peace you crave.

Commune with Nature for Emotional Health

When you’re looking for emotional health, keep in mind that many approaches are available. Some people attend therapy or take classes that are aimed at helping them succeed. Others meditate in a quiet place where they can be completely alone. How you use nature to improve your mood is a personal choice that only you can make.

Here are some possible ways to help improve your mood with nature:

• Sit near a body of water, such as a river, stream, lake, or ocean.
• Take time in a city park or other green, grassy area where it’s cool and calm.
• Listen to birds, a purring cat, or lapping waves in person or on a CD.
• Visualize yourself out in peaceful nature, even when you can’t be there.
• Make time for something in nature each and every day.

There are many ways to harness the restorative power of nature, and people who do so find that they feel more at peace even when they aren’t in a nature setting. You can be one of those people. Think about the type of environment you like. Rugged mountains? The ocean? Something else? No matter what kind of scenery you most enjoy, you can find inner peace and harmony there.

A Good Mood is a Choice

You can choose to be in a good mood. Even when things fail to go your way, your mood is completely up to you. Every day, when you start to feel anxious or upset, think about something that makes you feel peaceful. Spend more time taking in the beauty of your natural surroundings. When you do, you’ll be storing in your mind a reservoir of relaxing memories that can be called upon at any time to restore that peaceful feeling.

As you visualize what makes you happy, you’ll be able to hear and see it in your mind’s eye. You may even believe you smell the ocean or the grass. You’ll feel more relaxed, and your good mood will stay with you instead of being lost in an ocean of hurry and busyness. No matter the worry, big or small, natural surroundings can help you improve your mood and stay peaceful.

Relaxation Meditation Techniques – Know the Key Difference Between Relaxation and Meditation

By Heather Greaves

Relaxation is the foundation of meditation. It is the absence of body mind tension. Meditation is a receptive clear mind. It is the absence of all conditioning: social, cultural, and religious.

Tension and a conditioned mind have taken us away from our natural relaxed body and a clear mind; a mind that can see straight. So we must practice relaxation and meditation formally to remove body mind tension and the mental conditioning.

Relaxation Meditation Techniques

Relaxation techniques – These include progressive muscular relaxation, mental imagery, touch therapies like massage, polarity therapy and reiki. The sauna, stretches and movement also reduce body mind tension.

Depending on how in touch you are with your body, you may hear the body speaking. You might be completely deaf to your body’s messages as you go about your daily activities. Ever notice how when you have an opportunity to become quiet, oh my, suddenly you become aware of the tense shoulder, or the tight calf?

Meditation techniques – Two broad categories are outlined in Managing Stress by Brian Luke Seaward:

(1) Concentration or Exclusive

Thoughts focus inwards using mental repetition, visual concentration, repeated sounds, physical repetition, and tactile repetition. Eyes often closed.

(2) Inclusive

In detached observation, the conscious mind accepts whatever arises from the unconscious mind. One important point is that this must be done without judgment or analysis. This meditation is also called access meditation, insightful meditation and mindfulness. Eyes are usually open.

Reduce Stress

Relaxation – When you practice relaxation, the parasympathetic nervous system responsible for rest and recuperation is strengthened. Rest after work reduces stress and fosters health. Rest is not sleep. Relaxation reduces muscular tension and relaxes the conscious mind.

Meditation – Mind training increases stability in the constantly moving mind. The witness within comes alive, creating some distance between any potential volcanic activity of fears and desires. Natural qualities of joy and openness are experienced more and more. A meditation practice offers an opportunity to reduce incorrect perceptions of threat. Our world becomes safer.

Outcomes

Both relaxation and meditation reduce the impact of stress. While relaxation addresses the physical body and conscious mind, meditation transforms the content of the subconscious mind and reduces the frequency and intensity of stressors. Meditation brings fearlessness, as well as a greater sense of connectedness with our inner and outer world.

Practice relaxation meditation techniques to get back to the real you and a greater sense of well being.

Mental Relaxation – How Absence Can Benefit You

By Jose L Pineda

Mental relaxation is the absence of thoughts. At this stage of human development, it is impossible to command the absence of subconscious thoughts in the same way we induce physical relaxation in our bodies. That is, you cannot stop thinking by forcing your mind to stop thinking. The human mind processes thousands of thoughts every day. These thoughts radiate from your subconscious mind at amazing speeds. When your conscious mind becomes aware of such thoughts, you feel emotions.

However, there is a period of ‘silence’ between thoughts, and this period is not related to the process of thinking. The period during which your mind is quiet can bring you true relaxation if you become aware of this silence. You cannot force the mental periods of inactivity to occur, but when your consciousness perceives the existence of these periods of silence, the consequences are very beneficial to you. What really happens during these periods of mental silence is that the mind is emptied of everything in it. Since the majority of your thoughts are focused on the past and/or the future (worries, fears, sorrows, doubts, and so on), it is in those moments of silence when your mind becomes aware of what is truly real: the moment of now without opinions, judgments, or emotions.

This is a neutral existence where you, as a spiritual being, are observing these mental processes without involvement in how the processes unfold. The concept of mental silence is difficult to understand for many people, most of all because the vast majority have not had the experience of an ‘empty mind.’ However, this is not a new concept. For thousands of years, eastern cultures have practiced and taught methods to become aware of this silence through meditation. Today, these methods are increasingly gaining acceptance in the western world. What we really need to understand about the concept of mental relaxation is that it was a divine gift from our Creator. Think for a moment about the perfection in the design of our human experience.

Every thought is a creative seed. We are creators without the option of NOT creating, but with the option of what to create (since we create with our thoughts which we cannot stop). At the same time, these creative ‘seeds’ are separated by moments of stillness we cannot control, yet we can be aware of those moments or we can ignore them. The immense (and intense) activity of our mind is balanced by the immense passivity that occurs within it. And with our free will, we can decide how to use this activity and passivity.

Another important consideration about true mental relaxation is that, when achieved through meditation, you become aware of the only thing that is real: the moment of NOW. It is impossible to clear your mind in the past or the future. Through meditation, you come to understand the power of the now, the power of being present now. Observe your mind for a couple of days, and note that most of your ‘thinking’ is about the past or the future. The NOW is the only moment that actually exists. That’s why accepting the now, this moment, as the only reality is so important. And that is where true mental relaxation, through methods such as meditation, brings you great benefits.

Tips and Tricks to Beat Insomnia

Have you ever had trouble sleeping? Are you up late every night, struggling to settle into a comfortable position? Do you wake up each morning feeling like you haven’t slept a wink?

While you may have been in bed for five, six or seven hours, you may have only slept an hour or two. If this describes you, you are not alone.

Insomnia is a common issue that millions of people face. Sleep deprivation can affect your health, job performance, and even your relationships with the people you love. Your body and mind need enough rest to recharge your internal batteries.

If you lack the proper amount of rest, your body will become weaker and weaker. You’ll feel more lethargic and think less clearly. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to increase the quality and quantity of sleep you receive at night. A few small changes can make a difference between a life of vitality and one of lethargy.

Try these techniques to get a better night’s rest:

1. Make a schedule and stick to it. The most important strategy for beating insomnia is to maintain as consistent a schedule as possible. If you create a routine and go to bed at roughly the same time each night, your body will likely get used to shutting down for rest at that time.

• However, if you’re sleeping at a different time each night, your body isn’t prepared for sleep and acts accordingly. Estimate how much sleep you need, and determine what time you’ll go to bed each night.

• Also determine what time you’ll wake up each morning. Waking up at the same time each morning is just as important for establishing a rhythm for your body as going to sleep at the same time.

2. Stay away from caffeine. Do you find that you can’t function in the morning without a cup of coffee or two? Do you drink sodas with every meal? Cutting down on the caffeine you drink can have a dramatic effect on your quality of sleep. Caffeine messes with your body’s natural sleep cycle by spiking your blood sugar and then crashing it.

• The crash, however, normally doesn’t contribute to deep, restful sleep. Instead, it makes you feel lethargic and in need of more caffeine. As much as possible, stop the cycle and drink water instead. If your body is well hydrated, you’ll feel better throughout the day and likely sleep better at night.

3. Work out. Working up a sweat is an important aspect of a healthy lifestyle. It’s also an almost foolproof way to ensure you get a good night’s rest, as long as you avoid heavy exercising right before bed. As an added bonus, working out regularly will increase your energy and stamina throughout the day. Start small, keep it simple, and find something fun.

4. Relax before bedtime. Another important way to support your body’s effort at attaining the quality sleep you need is to give it a chance to wind down at the end of the day. If you fail to give your body and mind time to wind down, you take the stresses and challenges of your day to bed with you.

• Find something you enjoy that helps you to relax before bedtime. If it’s a favorite TV show, be sure to stay away from violence and dramatic themes that could cause your mind to be stressed while you’re trying to sleep. Try reading a book or listening to relaxing music instead.

Insomnia is a condition that can rob you of the life you were born to live. Instead, use these strategies to begin experiencing nights of deep, restful sleep and days that are filled with energy and vitality.

How to Have a Relaxed Lifestyle

By Barry R Parker

Everyone would like a happy, relaxed lifestyle — a calmness and serenity that lasts day after day. For most, however, this is difficult to achieve. Problems, frustrations, anxieties and so on get in the way. But if you take time to relax, you can come close. Relaxation is the key. When you are completely relaxed you are content and have an inner peace — a feeling of satisfaction and happiness with your life.

Although a relaxed lifestyle requires learning some relaxation techniques and using them it also needs something else. In particular, you also have to learn to relax at your job and other activities. Enjoying your job is of high priority. Don’t tie yourself up in knots trying to get your work done; you can get just as much done (and likely more) by working in a relaxed way.

Another thing that is important for a relaxed lifestyle is keeping busy. Keeping busy is, in fact, one of the best ways to keep yourself relaxed, but for this keep the following in mind.

  • Don’t undertake more than you can handle.
  • Don’t worry about your work, just do it.
  • When you start to feel stress, take a short break and relax. Don’t let it build up.

Some of the things that help you achieve a relaxed lifestyle are:

  • A good attitude
  • Having fun — living your life, not letting it just pass
  • Taking short vacations, even if just over a weekend
  • Short naps are helpful when you start to get stressed (15 minutes)
  • Spending a few minutes relaxing your muscles when they start to get tense
  • Using quiet periods
  • Meditation and music

Muscle Relaxation

For complete relaxation your muscles must be relaxed, and three of the major muscles to concentrate on are:

  • Muscles of the eyes
  • Muscles of the jaw and throat
  • Muscles of the heart and chest

Relax these muscles and you have gone a long ways toward total relaxation. The best way is to close your eyes and keep your mind blank, then concentrate on the area you wish to relax. Sit calmly and quietly and say to yourself, “I am relaxed… very relaxed.”

Apply this to the three above areas, and also to your shoulders if they feel tense. Do it for several minutes. When you are completely relaxed, you will feel much better..

The Three Minute Quiet Period

An alternative to the above that may, at times, be quicker and easier is the three minute quiet period. You can use it several times a day, or whenever you feel tension starting to build. Sit in a comfortable chair and remain quiet and relaxed for three minutes. Don’t think of anything — let your mind relax. Enjoy the moment.

(Meditation and music are also helpful, but I will deal with them in a separate article,)

It’s important to note that there are actually two types of tension: physical and mental. You feel physical tension in your muscles; they become tense and tight. Mental tension is generally associated with the mind, and it is caused by your emotions. The two types are related in that one usually leads to the other; in particular, mental tension almost always leads to physical tension.

You can go a long ways towards giving yourself a relaxed lifestyle by using the above relaxation methods. But for a completely relaxed lifestyle and its associated inner peace you also need the proper attitude.

The Proper Attitude

If you already have the proper attitude for a relaxed lifestyle you don’t have to worry. But most people don’t. You can’t be completely relaxed if you have a pessimistic, negative attitude. Your attitude has been developed over many years, and it came mainly from your parents and friends. At this stage of your life it’s likely well-ingrained, and if it is negative you will have to change it.

People with a negative attitude have a pessimistic outlook on life. They allow themselves to get upset and depressed by the smallest things. They dwell on the ills, difficulties and problems in their life; they think about them day after day, gradually magnifying them until they are out of control. They can’t face their problems; they let them become obsessions until finally they are so stressed out they have a nervous breakdown.

It’s critical that you “let go” before your problems become obsessions and ruin your life. Furthermore, in this state you cannot be relaxed, or have a relaxed lifestyle. You have to change your attitude.

Most of the problems of people in the above state are due to “habits”– habits that have been developed as a result of their attitude. What you want is to change these habits, and indeed you can if you change your attitude. It can’t be changed overnight, but it can be changed. (It’s well-known fact that habits can be changed.) If you have a negative outlook on life, make a resolution to change it. Begin by telling yourself that you don’t want your life to center around your problems and difficulties. You want a relaxed lifestyle that emphasizes optimism, happiness, contentment and inner peace. Think about it. Substitute positive thoughts for every negative one that comes into your mind. Little by little you will make progress. If you do it long enough, your subconscious mind will take over and change your habits automatically. In fact, it will change your entire personality.

Also, remember that in many cases it’s your attitude towards your problems that is the real problem, not the problem itself. Use this to your advantage. Think about your problem; is it really that important. If it is, list ways it can be solved and take action. In many cases, however, it may actually be quite trivial — built up in your mind. If so, relax and forget it. If it involves another person, talk it over calmly with them. Try to resolve it.

In summary, with the proper attitude you can develop a relaxed lifestyle by using the techniques that I discussed earlier in the article.

Ladies Make Relaxing Moments – Bubble Bath In Candle Light

By Daniel Grasser

We’ve often seen it in the movies, the star lady taking a bubble bath with candles lit all around the tub. You must have thought, “How relaxing that would be!” just seeing that image! Then it’s over and we go on with our lives forgetting that we too can have the same experience.

It’s taking that time for you. You deserve it and to make the most of these moments you can add a little pleasure to your relaxing time. When the kids are all tucked away, and maybe your husband is watching “something”, sneak away to your tub filling it with hot water and your favorite bubble bath. Just the anticipation should start you to feel relaxed as you prepare to slide in knowing you won’t be disturbed.

Now light a few candles and turn off the lights and you are ready. Smell the aroma of the scents. Slowly get in feeling the softness of the bubbles and the warmth of the water. Slide down sinking below just letting yourself go. When you rise again, you will see your candles giving off their soft glow of light. You can smell the aroma of the scents from your bubble bath and candles. Take a deep breath and feel yourself relaxing. Let your mind wonder taking your places as the aroma of your scents remind you of the pleasures from within your mind.

Yes, this is relaxing. This form of relaxing has been practiced from ancient times when the ladies poured special scents into their bath water, and lit their candles. Back then that’s all they had for light. So use it today for yourself. Take that time for you and enjoy the light from your candles, the aroma from your candles and bath oils that opens your mind to the feeling of relaxing. Pleasure yourself if only for these few moments with this special time for yourself.

Now you have created a special place just for you. Candle light, bath oils, hot water, and your special time to yourself. Cherish it and take it often.

This is called Aromatherapy when you use scented candles and oils to product the aroma associated with your bubble bath. Most bubble bath soaps have scents, and many candles have scents. To reach the desire Aromatherapy level to feel that deep relaxation find both scents that will fill your bath with your desired aroma to better allow you to find that special place. The use of Aromatherapy is the use of scents to produce a mood change or a healing process.

Just think about the Bubble bath with lighted candles around the edge of the tub all in the scent that takes you to your relaxing setting. Coupled with the bath, it will be an exhilarating experience for you to enjoy you quiet moment away from the world. Take that bath, breath in the aroma, relax. Create a Relaxing Home Environment

A peaceful relaxing home environment is vital for the nourishment of your family relationships and the stress relief that makes success away from your home possible.

There are small steps you can take to transform your home from one of chaos and disorder, to one of relaxation and tranquility. By creating an inviting home environment, you’ll make guests feel welcome and experience family harmony.

Try these strategies to create more peace in your home:

1. Get rid of the clutter. It’s hard to feel relaxed with piles of stuff all around you. If your home is a mess, begin today and take small steps to eliminate the clutter that clouds your space in your mind. Throw away or donate anything that doesn’t contribute to your life in a positive way.

2. Use aromatherapy. Once much of the clutter has been removed from your home, you’ll begin to notice a sense of calm and peace. To take this feeling to the next level and make the most of your home environment, consider adding smells that please your entire family.

• Light scented candles. Fill your home with beautiful, fresh smelling plants. Consider a sweet smelling air freshener spray. This small change can make a big difference in your mood, especially after a long, hard day at the office.

3. Make your home beautiful. Beautiful paintings or artwork can encourage feelings of peace and happiness within your family. Display family pictures of memories and events that make you smile. As you walk into your home throughout the day, these memories will flood into your mind, and you’ll feel closer to your family and less stressed.

4. Develop family routines. Create routines that help your family support each other and make keeping the peace you’ve created in your home much easier. Develop an evening routine that makes mornings easier. Plan breakfast ahead of time and pick out clothes for the kids.

Small changes can make a big difference in the peace you feel in your home. A space that is free from clutter, filled with smells and sights that make you feel happy, and routines that help you to keep it that way are all you need to create the relaxed, welcoming home atmosphere that your family deserves.
