Relaxation Tips

What is Relaxation?

In common terminology, relaxation means that we leave ourselves free of tension. Relaxing mind may mean that the mind is not under stress or active. In today’s lifestyle, this looks difficult. Isn’t it?

Now a days, most of us believe to be being under stress during most of the week and relax only on the weekends. This is considered the common way of life. Is this the right way of living? Is living a relaxed life all the time not our right? Let us reclaim it.

Bad stress -

If you ask anyone that why is he/she under stress most of the week, what answer do you expect to get? I have so much work to do, deadlines to meet, tasks to be completed, prepare for the new launch etc. Don’t you think that something like this will be the response?

Let us discuss why most of us are stressed all the time. At some time in our life, while we are chasing the dreams we lose our habit of sitting back and reflecting. We begin giving auto responses. If we are held up in a traffic jam, our response is – either to worry about the work ahead, or blame the system or some such negative thought. Not many of us think – All right. If the traffic is not moving, let me relax, listen to some good music, or go back to some childhood memories, remember good friends, let me make the best use of the time to relax and enjoy life. Not many of us respond in this way. We respond in stressed way whenever we come across any similar situation. This habit is taking a big toll on our quality of life.

Stress – A way of life.

We have taken stress as a way of life. Very few of us think about why they are trying to work at such a hectic pace and if ultimately, we are going to leave this world with a lot of incomplete work, why not at least work in a relaxed way? What is the use of working so much , if we kill all the joy. In search of a better tomorrow, we kill the present. Isn’t it?

Stressed work environment, stressed family life, no time to just walk around doing nothing but watch the nature…Why? It is as if we want to achieve most in the shortest possible time and therefore have no time to relax Working non-stop all the week is a way of life for a large majority. The increase in cardiac attacks, depression etc, are all the results of this stressed lifestyle. When we get stressed, we look around for the latest stress busters, latest therapies, etc. to counter the stress.

And then by the time the week ends, we again go out somewhere to relax. Sometimes holidays also tire, don’t they?

Why not lead a relaxed life all through the week?

Why not work in a relaxed frame of mind? Why get stressed?

Reflection about our own life is very essential if we want to reclaim our right to live peacefully. Will it help, if we bring some beautiful scenes of nature on our computers? Will it help, if we find time to watch a butterfly flying on our screens? The beauty of a colorful flower. Can it make us little relaxed?

If your answer is yes, download screensavers and find time to watch them whenever you find time while working. Look at them, wonder about the beauty of nature, think of their perfection and just relax.

Using Nature For Relaxation and Mood Boosters

Everyone gets a little down from time to time, but you can avoid letting that control you. Nature is one of the best mood boosters available. The beauty of your surroundings can help you feel happy and relax you. Focus on the cycle of life and the beauty of your surroundings.

Go outside and take a deep breath. Enjoy the smell of plants and flowers. Stare into the sky and listen to the chirp of the birds in the trees. All of those things are excellent ways to feel better. Live in a city? If you feel like you’re surrounded by concrete and glass, it can be hard to feel peaceful. But there’s almost certainly a city park within a short driving distance from your home where you can take the time to look for the peace you crave.

Commune with Nature for Emotional Health

When you’re looking for emotional health, keep in mind that many approaches are available. Some people attend therapy or take classes that are aimed at helping them succeed. Others meditate in a quiet place where they can be completely alone. How you use nature to improve your mood is a personal choice that only you can make.

Here are some possible ways to help improve your mood with nature:

• Sit near a body of water, such as a river, stream, lake, or ocean.
• Take time in a city park or other green, grassy area where it’s cool and calm.
• Listen to birds, a purring cat, or lapping waves in person or on a CD.
• Visualize yourself out in peaceful nature, even when you can’t be there.
• Make time for something in nature each and every day.

There are many ways to harness the restorative power of nature, and people who do so find that they feel more at peace even when they aren’t in a nature setting. You can be one of those people. Think about the type of environment you like. Rugged mountains? The ocean? Something else? No matter what kind of scenery you most enjoy, you can find inner peace and harmony there.

A Good Mood is a Choice

You can choose to be in a good mood. Even when things fail to go your way, your mood is completely up to you. Every day, when you start to feel anxious or upset, think about something that makes you feel peaceful. Spend more time taking in the beauty of your natural surroundings. When you do, you’ll be storing in your mind a reservoir of relaxing memories that can be called upon at any time to restore that peaceful feeling.

As you visualize what makes you happy, you’ll be able to hear and see it in your mind’s eye. You may even believe you smell the ocean or the grass. You’ll feel more relaxed, and your good mood will stay with you instead of being lost in an ocean of hurry and busyness. No matter the worry, big or small, natural surroundings can help you improve your mood and stay peaceful.

Mental Relaxation – How Absence Can Benefit You

By Jose L Pineda

Mental relaxation is the absence of thoughts. At this stage of human development, it is impossible to command the absence of subconscious thoughts in the same way we induce physical relaxation in our bodies. That is, you cannot stop thinking by forcing your mind to stop thinking. The human mind processes thousands of thoughts every day. These thoughts radiate from your subconscious mind at amazing speeds. When your conscious mind becomes aware of such thoughts, you feel emotions.

However, there is a period of ‘silence’ between thoughts, and this period is not related to the process of thinking. The period during which your mind is quiet can bring you true relaxation if you become aware of this silence. You cannot force the mental periods of inactivity to occur, but when your consciousness perceives the existence of these periods of silence, the consequences are very beneficial to you. What really happens during these periods of mental silence is that the mind is emptied of everything in it. Since the majority of your thoughts are focused on the past and/or the future (worries, fears, sorrows, doubts, and so on), it is in those moments of silence when your mind becomes aware of what is truly real: the moment of now without opinions, judgments, or emotions.

This is a neutral existence where you, as a spiritual being, are observing these mental processes without involvement in how the processes unfold. The concept of mental silence is difficult to understand for many people, most of all because the vast majority have not had the experience of an ‘empty mind.’ However, this is not a new concept. For thousands of years, eastern cultures have practiced and taught methods to become aware of this silence through meditation. Today, these methods are increasingly gaining acceptance in the western world. What we really need to understand about the concept of mental relaxation is that it was a divine gift from our Creator. Think for a moment about the perfection in the design of our human experience.

Every thought is a creative seed. We are creators without the option of NOT creating, but with the option of what to create (since we create with our thoughts which we cannot stop). At the same time, these creative ‘seeds’ are separated by moments of stillness we cannot control, yet we can be aware of those moments or we can ignore them. The immense (and intense) activity of our mind is balanced by the immense passivity that occurs within it. And with our free will, we can decide how to use this activity and passivity.

Another important consideration about true mental relaxation is that, when achieved through meditation, you become aware of the only thing that is real: the moment of NOW. It is impossible to clear your mind in the past or the future. Through meditation, you come to understand the power of the now, the power of being present now. Observe your mind for a couple of days, and note that most of your ‘thinking’ is about the past or the future. The NOW is the only moment that actually exists. That’s why accepting the now, this moment, as the only reality is so important. And that is where true mental relaxation, through methods such as meditation, brings you great benefits.

How to Have a Relaxed Lifestyle

By Barry R Parker

Everyone would like a happy, relaxed lifestyle — a calmness and serenity that lasts day after day. For most, however, this is difficult to achieve. Problems, frustrations, anxieties and so on get in the way. But if you take time to relax, you can come close. Relaxation is the key. When you are completely relaxed you are content and have an inner peace — a feeling of satisfaction and happiness with your life.

Although a relaxed lifestyle requires learning some relaxation techniques and using them it also needs something else. In particular, you also have to learn to relax at your job and other activities. Enjoying your job is of high priority. Don’t tie yourself up in knots trying to get your work done; you can get just as much done (and likely more) by working in a relaxed way.

Another thing that is important for a relaxed lifestyle is keeping busy. Keeping busy is, in fact, one of the best ways to keep yourself relaxed, but for this keep the following in mind.

  • Don’t undertake more than you can handle.
  • Don’t worry about your work, just do it.
  • When you start to feel stress, take a short break and relax. Don’t let it build up.

Some of the things that help you achieve a relaxed lifestyle are:

  • A good attitude
  • Having fun — living your life, not letting it just pass
  • Taking short vacations, even if just over a weekend
  • Short naps are helpful when you start to get stressed (15 minutes)
  • Spending a few minutes relaxing your muscles when they start to get tense
  • Using quiet periods
  • Meditation and music

Muscle Relaxation

For complete relaxation your muscles must be relaxed, and three of the major muscles to concentrate on are:

  • Muscles of the eyes
  • Muscles of the jaw and throat
  • Muscles of the heart and chest

Relax these muscles and you have gone a long ways toward total relaxation. The best way is to close your eyes and keep your mind blank, then concentrate on the area you wish to relax. Sit calmly and quietly and say to yourself, “I am relaxed… very relaxed.”

Apply this to the three above areas, and also to your shoulders if they feel tense. Do it for several minutes. When you are completely relaxed, you will feel much better..

The Three Minute Quiet Period

An alternative to the above that may, at times, be quicker and easier is the three minute quiet period. You can use it several times a day, or whenever you feel tension starting to build. Sit in a comfortable chair and remain quiet and relaxed for three minutes. Don’t think of anything — let your mind relax. Enjoy the moment.

(Meditation and music are also helpful, but I will deal with them in a separate article,)

It’s important to note that there are actually two types of tension: physical and mental. You feel physical tension in your muscles; they become tense and tight. Mental tension is generally associated with the mind, and it is caused by your emotions. The two types are related in that one usually leads to the other; in particular, mental tension almost always leads to physical tension.

You can go a long ways towards giving yourself a relaxed lifestyle by using the above relaxation methods. But for a completely relaxed lifestyle and its associated inner peace you also need the proper attitude.

The Proper Attitude

If you already have the proper attitude for a relaxed lifestyle you don’t have to worry. But most people don’t. You can’t be completely relaxed if you have a pessimistic, negative attitude. Your attitude has been developed over many years, and it came mainly from your parents and friends. At this stage of your life it’s likely well-ingrained, and if it is negative you will have to change it.

People with a negative attitude have a pessimistic outlook on life. They allow themselves to get upset and depressed by the smallest things. They dwell on the ills, difficulties and problems in their life; they think about them day after day, gradually magnifying them until they are out of control. They can’t face their problems; they let them become obsessions until finally they are so stressed out they have a nervous breakdown.

It’s critical that you “let go” before your problems become obsessions and ruin your life. Furthermore, in this state you cannot be relaxed, or have a relaxed lifestyle. You have to change your attitude.

Most of the problems of people in the above state are due to “habits”– habits that have been developed as a result of their attitude. What you want is to change these habits, and indeed you can if you change your attitude. It can’t be changed overnight, but it can be changed. (It’s well-known fact that habits can be changed.) If you have a negative outlook on life, make a resolution to change it. Begin by telling yourself that you don’t want your life to center around your problems and difficulties. You want a relaxed lifestyle that emphasizes optimism, happiness, contentment and inner peace. Think about it. Substitute positive thoughts for every negative one that comes into your mind. Little by little you will make progress. If you do it long enough, your subconscious mind will take over and change your habits automatically. In fact, it will change your entire personality.

Also, remember that in many cases it’s your attitude towards your problems that is the real problem, not the problem itself. Use this to your advantage. Think about your problem; is it really that important. If it is, list ways it can be solved and take action. In many cases, however, it may actually be quite trivial — built up in your mind. If so, relax and forget it. If it involves another person, talk it over calmly with them. Try to resolve it.

In summary, with the proper attitude you can develop a relaxed lifestyle by using the techniques that I discussed earlier in the article.

Create a Relaxing Home Environment

A peaceful relaxing home environment is vital for the nourishment of your family relationships and the stress relief that makes success away from your home possible.

There are small steps you can take to transform your home from one of chaos and disorder, to one of relaxation and tranquility. By creating an inviting home environment, you’ll make guests feel welcome and experience family harmony.

Try these strategies to create more peace in your home:

1. Get rid of the clutter. It’s hard to feel relaxed with piles of stuff all around you. If your home is a mess, begin today and take small steps to eliminate the clutter that clouds your space in your mind. Throw away or donate anything that doesn’t contribute to your life in a positive way.

2. Use aromatherapy. Once much of the clutter has been removed from your home, you’ll begin to notice a sense of calm and peace. To take this feeling to the next level and make the most of your home environment, consider adding smells that please your entire family.

• Light scented candles. Fill your home with beautiful, fresh smelling plants. Consider a sweet smelling air freshener spray. This small change can make a big difference in your mood, especially after a long, hard day at the office.

3. Make your home beautiful. Beautiful paintings or artwork can encourage feelings of peace and happiness within your family. Display family pictures of memories and events that make you smile. As you walk into your home throughout the day, these memories will flood into your mind, and you’ll feel closer to your family and less stressed.

4. Develop family routines. Create routines that help your family support each other and make keeping the peace you’ve created in your home much easier. Develop an evening routine that makes mornings easier. Plan breakfast ahead of time and pick out clothes for the kids.

Small changes can make a big difference in the peace you feel in your home. A space that is free from clutter, filled with smells and sights that make you feel happy, and routines that help you to keep it that way are all you need to create the relaxed, welcoming home atmosphere that your family deserves.

Tips to Ease a Troubled Mind

Do you feel restless, worrying about the troubles you currently face? Do you long for peace in your mind and confidence about the direction you’re headed? Instead of avoiding your thoughts and challenges, focus on acceptance and solutions. You don’t have to deal with a troubled mind forever. You have the power within yourself to mend your situation.

Try the following techniques to ease your troubled mind:

1. Accept your situation. Resolve today to accept the things about your situation that you cannot change. If you fight the fact that you have difficulties, you’ll turn your challenges into bigger ones. Accepting your situation can bring you a certain peace within yourself that makes dealing with the challenges you face easier.

2. Focus on solutions. Instead of dwelling on the obstacles in front of you, think of as many solutions as possible. Pick the choice that seems best to you and begin implementing it today.

• In every moment, ask yourself whether or not there’s something you can be doing to work toward a solution. Ask yourself, “What could I do right now that would make this situation better?” Take action, and you’ll almost always experience an immediate sense of relief.

3. Focus on letting go of the past. Regret and sorrow about the past are huge contributors to a troubled mind. You might find it easy to forget the small things, but larger issues from the past continue to creep into your mind. Your past is behind you, and a peaceful future is ahead if you choose to embrace it.

4. Ask for help. Rather than facing the difficulties of life alone, open yourself up to friends or trusted family members. You can even seek professional help if necessary. The expertise and support of others may be just what you need to experience a breakthrough.

5. Do something fun. Sometimes all it takes is something lighthearted to get your mind into a better place. Instead of wallowing in a bad mood, choose something that you like to do and give yourself a break. Temporarily leave your cares behind and immerse yourself in an activity you enjoy.

6. Make new friends. Making new friends is a great way to get your mind off of your troubles. Friends will be there to support you when you’re down and open you up to new options that you probably wouldn’t have considered otherwise. When you focus on others, it distracts you and increases your self-esteem at the same time.

7. Focus on relaxation. If your thoughts cause you to feel anxious and tense, set aside time for deep breathing and relaxation. Find a quiet place, close your eyes, and pay attention to your breath. Breathe deeply and slowly. It only takes a few minutes to replace feelings of anxiety with feelings of peace and relaxation.

If your mind is troubled, listen to your feelings. Let them cause you to seek relief. Ignoring these anxious thoughts may make you feel worse. Instead, choose one or more of these ideas and put it into practice today. If you do, you’ll begin to experience the inner peace you crave!

Keep the Peace and Relaxation of Spring All Year Long

Spring is a time of growth, renewal and peace. As nature uncurls from a long winter slumber, she yawns and stretches, getting ready for the changing of the seasons. People are cyclical, too, and spring often brings peaceful feelings. The good news is that you can keep that peace all year round.

Spring provides something outwardly soothing to focus on. But you can also maintain inner tranquility, even if the things around you are going crazy. Everyone is different, but that springtime feeling can be a part of your experience in any season of life.

Keeping Peace Inside Your Home

Your home is the place you come to unwind after a long, stressful day. Whether you live alone or with others, you want your home to invite you in to relax and feel at peace.

When you live with others, you may feel a lack of serenity when you come home. Your family’s noise, a rambunctious pet, or too much clutter can cloud your mind and keep you from the harmony you deserve. Find a room where you can be by yourself to relax and rejuvenate. Insist that others respect this private space.

If you have small children, establishing a private space for yourself can be a challenge. A room to yourself (with a door you can lock) is ideal. You can recapture the peace in your home, though, even if all you have is a small corner of a room that is all your own.

Peace comes from what’s around you, but it also comes from inside you. Inner stillness is something that you choose to keep, and only you can choose to give it away.

In order to help you practice peace, try these suggestions:

• Breathe deeply from your abdomen to relax your mind and body.
• Listen to soft, calming music that you enjoy.
• Play a game that alleviates stress.
• Watch a funny movie and laugh out loud.
• Eat something soothing (in moderation) like chocolate or ice cream.
• Cuddle with a soft blanket, stuffed animal, pet or a sleeping child.
• Use room sprays or candles that make your surroundings smell pleasant.
• Drink a cup of mint tea or another calming drink.

Keeping Peace Elsewhere – Taking It With You

Remember that peace is a choice. Stressful situations occur from time to time. How you respond determines the level of serenity you feel inside.

The quiet relaxation of spring can be yours in any season. Take a few deep breaths and stop for a moment to notice the beauty around you. If things around you are chaotic, it’s okay. They’re only things around you. They aren’t you.

The chaos that surrounds you can only overcome the harmony within you if you allow it to do so. You can feel peaceful when the rest of the world appears to be falling apart. With a little practice, you can easily keep your peace in any situation. Soon, you’ll find that the peace of spring is with you all year long.

Healing Breath

People don’t often think about their body’s automatic actions such as their heartbeat, blinking or breathing. The heartbeat is required to pump blood throughout the body. Blinking moistens and cleans the eyes. Breathing is necessary for life. Have you heard of Healing Breath? You may be surprised to know how using this type of breathing can be beneficial.

The Healing Breath is much more than the breathing you do every day. It is basically learning to control your breath by using both your mind and your body.

Many people don’t realize how their breathing is shallow and possibly doesn’t provide the oxygen the body needs. In fact, how you breathe while you’re sleeping is entirely different from how you breathe while you’re awake. That may explain why you feel more rejuvenated after waking up than during the remainder of the day.

Scientists have begun to realize the importance of breathing technique in helping the body run properly. Depending upon which breathing technique you learn, you may find the following and other conditions improve:

* Asthma
* Bronchitis
* Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
* Panic attacks
* Rhinitis (Runny nose)
* Sinusitis
* Snoring/Sleep Apnea
* Hay fever or other allergies
* Depression
* Handling pain

Ayurvedic Pranayama breathing is very similar to some other breathing techniques. This one, however, is very simple to practice, doesn’t require you to use visualization, and can be practiced nearly anywhere.

The Healing Breath in this format is completed in three different parts, all regulated to a pattern of ‘1:4:2’. Begin by inhaling for the count of one, hold your breath for 4 counts, and exhale for the remaining two counts. Those beginning the Healing Breath begin using higher rates, but the ratio remains the same. For instance, inhale to the count of 4, hold for the count of 16, and exhale for the count of 8. The ratio remains stable.

As you practice this breathing technique and your breathing becomes stronger, you can increase the ratio to 6:24:12 and then to 8:32:16 as you improve further. When you’re first learning this technique, you may want to use a clock with an audible “tick-tock” to help you keep your breaths to one second intervals. Be careful to remain focused during these exercises so you keep your ratio.

Since proper breathing is so important – inhaling which is taking oxygen into the body (purifying the blood) and exhaling which releases waste products and toxins – it’s easy to see why learning the Healing Breath is something to consider. After learning how to breathe properly you may find many of your health issues are reduced or gone entirely.

How to Find Joy in Summer Nature Exploration

As you delight in the first warm breezes of summer, you may feel the urge to start spending more time outdoors. Go for it! When you allow yourself to give in to Nature’s call, you’ll find a plethora of exhilarating experiences awaiting you.

Not only is getting outdoors a great way to exercise, but it’ll also give you the opportunity to take pleasure in exploring the simple things in nature. In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to overlook the importance of nature and the wonderful benefits it can bring to both your body and mind.

Summer nature exploration can be as simple as an afternoon walk around a wooded area. Or it can consist of something bigger, like a several-day camping trip. One of the great things about exploring nature is that you can decide how and when to best fit it into your busy lifestyle.

Nature offers a wide range of choices. You decide how long you want to explore, where you want to go, and what kinds of things you want to see.

Young children make partaking in nature exploration even more enjoyable. Children are often fascinated by all kinds of things. Even if you’re going exploring with adults or by yourself, you can rediscover that childlike wonder that you had when you were little. Exploring nature is a rich way to find the joy you deserve.

Getting Started

To prepare for your exploration, consider the things in nature that fascinate or excite you. What brings you joy might be very different from someone else. Do you want to go to the mountains? How about a scenic trip to a lake near you? Would you relish the quiet beauty of a nature walk through the forest? You choose what to see, do, and explore.

If you give it some thought, you can plan a summer nature exploration that’ll recharge your batteries and refresh your spirit.

Consider these questions to plan the perfect nature getaway:

• What kinds of plants and animals do you want to see?
• Do you want to camp overnight or only go for the day?
• What are the ages of the people you’re taking with you?
• Is anyone allergic to anything?
• How much do you know about the area and the creatures that live there?

Nothing Can Take Your Joy Unless You Give It Away

If it rains on your trip, or if you accidentally grab a poison ivy plant, you can refuse to let that steal your joy. Rain refreshes the air, makes plants thrive so you can enjoy their beauty, and can even be fun to play in. On the other hand, poison ivy isn’t all that fun, but it’s not a life-threatening situation, either. You can still tell great vacation stories about the time you got poison ivy!

Part of exploring nature is learning to find the humor and positive things about every situation. And, what you focus on becomes your reality. Laugh, love and explore. Allow the beauty of your surroundings to fuel your inner joy.

Nature often makes you feel more at peace. Flowing water, flowering plants, and frolicking wildlife bring smiles to people of all ages. These things make you stop for a moment and relax. That’s healthy for your body and soul. The old adage to “stop and smell the roses” is more valuable to you and your long-term health than you might think!

Take time this summer to explore nature. Nature provides one of the best ways to increase your sense of peace, joy, and connection to your world. Whether you go by yourself or with a group of people, a summer nature exploration can be just the thing you need to restore and rekindle the joy in your life.

Sit Back and Let the World Go By

At some point in your hectic life, you may feel like screaming “Stop the world, I want to get off!” Life can come at you in a blur at times. It’s at those moments you want to sit back and let the world go by.

Taking time to refresh yourself is extremely important in today’s hurried pace. Rather than trying to ‘keep up with the Joneses,’ why not make a change to your life for the better. Learn to step back on a regular basis and enjoy a day of peace and quiet.

* Do you like to read but never find time to do it? How long has it been since you’ve simply lost yourself in a book? Set aside time each week to do just that. Give yourself permission to spend a couple of hours delving into the newest novel by your favorite author. Or go back and re-read one of your favorite books. Curl up with a cup of coffee or hot tea and allow yourself to get lost in the pages. You’ll feel refreshed and more ready to face your busy schedule once you’ve taken a break.

* When was the last time your family took a vacation? How about a long weekend where you could get away from your normal schedule? If you live close to the beach, setting aside time to enjoy the sunshine and the sound of the waves may be just what your family needs to get rejuvenated.

* Take a walk during your lunch hour instead of hurrying to eat and get back to work. Take your full allotted time so you can relax a little bit before rejoining the rat race. Spend some time sitting on a bench watching the people passing by. Enjoy the warmth of the sun and the fresh air. You’ll be amazed at how awake you are when you return to work.

* Head to the gym when you feel the pressure and stress of a busy schedule getting the best of you. Not only will exercise strengthen your muscles, it will also help reduce the effects of stress you may be feeling. Does this mean you have to spend hours at the gym to get these benefits? Of course not. However, a minimum of 30 minutes three days a week is recommended to get the most benefit.

* Take the time to do some research on the internet to see if there are meditation retreats in your area. What’s a meditation retreat? They are short trips to facilities which are known for being quiet. This could be a convent or monastery but could also be a campground in the mountains. The point is to take the time away from your stress-filled days to reconnect with your own hopes and dreams by spending time in meditation.

When your world is going crazy and there doesn’t seem to be enough time to breathe, getting away to sit back and let the world go by can be what you need most. Give it a try! Use one of the above ideas to help you step back from your hurried life and bring back a sense of peace and sanity.
