This stress can be hard on the mind and body, but the good news is that you can lower your stress levels and calm your mind, helping yourself to feel better each day. </p>
<p><strong>In fact, you can overcome these issues with a few simple techniques!</strong></p>
<p>First, acknowledge that you must take time for yourself. Being all things to all people isn&#8217;t realistic, and neither is doing everything and solving all problems or concerns in one day. No one should expect that of you! If they do, you must recognize that it&#8217;s not healthy, and you must do what&#8217;s right and best for you. Your health and happiness could depend on it.</p>
<p><strong>Ways to Calm Your Mind</strong></p>
<p>Meditation and prayer are two of the biggest ways to calm a restless mind, but they aren&#8217;t the only things you can do. There are many other choices to help you feel better and live a stress-free life. You might also consider:</p>
<p>•	Volunteering or focusing on helping others<br />
•	Exercising<br />
•	Listening to music<br />
•	Using your mind for joyous pursuits that interest you<br />
•	Playing with children or pets</p>
<p>Everyone has different things they enjoy in life, and you should find yours and practice them when you start to feel stressed or your thoughts try to run away from you. Avoid letting your thoughts talk you out of your dreams. Your dreams are yours; embrace them!</p>
<p>Being busy is not the problem when it comes to your mind. Being busy with things that aggravate you and make you feel down is the problem. Instead of dwelling on things that upset you, deal with them, let them go, and move on to things that you enjoy. You can do this with your thoughts, just like you would with a physical task in the workplace or at home. </p>

At times the stress is positive such as having a baby or trying to win a race. At other times it’s negative such as having too much to do and not enough time to do it. You can use some of these stress busters for busy people and see if they help you reduce the stress you’re feeling.</p>
<p>It’s important for people to learn to unwind and release some of the stress they feel. This can be done in a number of ways. You may not have a long weekend to help you relax, but you can learn to relax in shorter periods of time.<br />
<strong><br />
If you’re really tense and need to calm down quickly, take a few deep breaths.</strong> This is one of the easiest and quickest ways to reverse the effects of stress. Since you’re probably not using very much of your lung capacity while you’re tensed up, you’ll be surprised how much this action helps. Take a deep, long breath in through your nose. When you can’t take in any more, open your mouth and let the air go through. Making an “hhhhaaaa” sound while releasing the air helps. Do this several times and you’re guaranteed to feel less stressed.</p>
<p>While you’re in a stressful situation, you may not be able to easily get away. As soon as you can, <strong>take a short walk outside to get fresh air.</strong> The change of scenery, sunshine and fresh air can do wonders to help alleviate the stress you’re feeling. </p>
<p>If you have a break during the day, even if it’s only fifteen minutes, <strong>take the time to meditate.</strong> Play some soft music and concentrate on relaxing images or places. Of course, if you have longer to spend meditating your results might be better, but even a short time can do wonders for your outlook.</p>
<p><strong>Take a book along with you and read that during your planned breaks.</strong> While it’s true you may not be able to read very much, the important thing is to take your mind away from the stressful things in your day. </p>
<p><strong>Play quiet, soothing music during your day.</strong> Music has been proven to have much health and stress-reducing benefits. If you can’t listen to music at work or it’s too hectic to hear it, find a compact disc you can listen to during the ride home or while you’re doing other things such as cooking, shopping, or exercising.</p>
<p><strong>Take time out of your day to laugh.</strong> Laughter is one of the best ways to release stress. The stress hormones epinephrine and cortisol reduce while the hormone oxytoxin increases. Oxytoxin is sometimes called the ‘happy hormone.’ Laughter also gets more oxygen into your body which makes you feel better.</p>
<p>You can undoubtedly find other stress busters for busy people, but these may give you some ideas you can try. Learning to unwind is important for not only your mental health but also for you physical health. What are you doing to unwind and reduce stress in your life?</p>

You may not be able to do much about the things stressing you, but can you do something to help the senior citizens in your life? What stress management techniques for seniors can you pass along to help them?</p>
<p>Even though most seniors already know it, you may want to help them remember that managing stress is simply taking charge of the things in your life that you can control. This may mean managing a schedule that seems to have gotten out of control. It could also mean being sure to strive for balance in life rather than letting life run you ragged.</p>
<p>Help them identify what the stressors are in their life. Are they concerned about having enough money to live off of in their golden years? Can you go with them to speak with a financial advisor? They may be able to subdue some of the fears which are causing so much stress.</p>
<p>Are the seniors in your life stressed about their health? Go with them to their next doctor’s appointment and discuss their concerns with the doctor. They will likely be able to address those concerns or recommend they visit a specialist who can better help them. Their doctor may suggest they spend time with a psychologist to help them deal with the stressors they experience.</p>
<p>Suggest they take yoga classes to help them manage their stress. Yoga will teach them to improve their posture, learn to breathe properly, and may help them become more limber. Another benefit to learning yoga is that it helps the body relax, which means they’ll learn to manage the stress they feel.</p>
<p>Meditation is another stress management technique seniors may want to try. Once they learn to meditate, they will find their heart rate slows, their blood pressure lowers, and they’ll be taking in more oxygen. All of these things lead seniors to manage their stress in a more effective way.</p>
<p>Have you always liked to put together jigsaw puzzles? There’s something very relaxing about putting puzzles together. They can concentrate on the puzzle alone which may make the stress seniors feel less of a problem.</p>
<p>Suggest they stay away from people who cause them stress. Perhaps they have a neighbor that bothers them and wants to borrow tools all the time. They can learn to say ‘no’ when a request is made, or simply refuse to answer the door. If they’re able to avoid the stressor they won’t be affected by it.</p>
<p>They may want to downsize their home. Even though your parents may have lived in the same home their entire married life, if they’re in a two-story home and neither can climb stairs very well, it might be time to move to a one-floor home. The thoughts of moving may cause stress, especially if they have years of accumulated things, but they may feel a sense of freedom once they’re in a new, smaller home.</p>
<p>No one wants to be affected by stress, particularly when they’re supposed to be headed to their golden years. There are many stress management techniques for seniors to try. Encourage them to try several methods until they find the one that’s best for them.</p>

Besides heart and digestive problems, stress can contribute to overall muscle aches, stiffness and even pain.</p>
<p>Relaxation techniques can help manage the affects of stress on the body as well as the mind. There are various techniques one can use to experience a state of relaxation and calmness, which require little time or effort on the part of the individual seeking to benefit from them.</p>
<p>Here is one relaxation technique that many people have found beneficial in managing the level of stress they experience.</p>
<p><strong>Stair Step Relaxation Technique</strong></p>
<p>Begin with a series of deep, cleansing breaths. Feel your body relax, as you slowly breath in and out. It can be helpful to imagine the tension and stress leaving your body as you exhale, while peace and calm fill you, as you inhale clean, fresh air.<span id="more-1494"></span></p>
<p>Once you have done this for a period of two to three minutes, begin to experience the tension leaving your muscles, one at a time.</p>
<p>Once you are ready, picture yourself at the top of a flight of 10 stairs. Take one step down this set of stairs, and imagine that your body, your mind, and your spirit feel more relaxed, and more at ease as you reach this step. Say the number “One” as you descend.</p>
<p>With each succeeding step you can experience a deeper and deeper state of calm and relaxation. As you descend upon each step say the corresponding number of the step you are on.</p>
<p>When you reach 10, which is at the bottom of this set of steps, you will be entirely calm and relaxed. Any problems or worries you had will have vanished, and you will feel totally at peace.</p>
<p>Once you have experienced this state for a moment or two, you will be ready to come back up the set of stairs. With each step that you climb, you will become a little more awake and alert to your surroundings.</p>
<p>Your body and mind will remain at calm and at peace even after you return to the final step. You will feel renewed energy, and a renewed sense of purpose and joy, as you return to the top of the stairs.</p>

<p>Some people who suffer from mild depression and stress may want to include some activities in their day which will produce laughter as a means to reduce their depression and stress. Why laughter? There are many reasons.</p>
<p>Many mental health practitioners believe laughter to be a great stress reliever. Research also shows that it increases endorphins, chemicals in the brain which control the reward system. This means you begin to feel good or feel pleasure when you laugh, similar to the effect you get when using drugs.<span id="more-1290"></span></p>
<p>Laughter can also lower the hormone levels which may cause stress or a weakened immune state. It moves your body, both internally and externally, increases blood flow, and gives you an energy boost. Your lungs, liver, pancreas, intestines, heart, and brain are all beneficially affected by it. All-in-all, you simply feel better when you laugh and for some time afterwards.</p>
<p>Here are some of the physical ways your body is affected by a good belly laugh:</p>
<p>* It relaxes your muscles for as much as 45 minutes after a good laugh<br />
* It boosts immunity which may reduce your chances of getting sick<br />
* It lowers your stress hormones which makes it easier to relax<br />
* It decreases pain which may enable people to sleep or rest<br />
* It helps prevent heart disease by increasing blood circulation<br />
* It improves your mood which is a benefit to those suffering from mild depression</p>
<p>Laughter can also improve the social aspect of our life. If we laugh easily, people are more likely to want to be around us because we’re fun. Being able to laugh freely may also strengthen our relationships, help diffuse conflict, and enhance our ability to work in a team.</p>
<p>Laughter is something most children enjoy without reserve. Unfortunately, as we get older that tendency to find humor in daily situations wanes and we begin to feel stress. Maybe it’s time to laugh your blues away as a means to reduce symptoms of depression and stress. Since laughter is seen as medicine, is anyone up for a comedy movie?</p>
