Growing older can be frustrating. Besides all of the aches and pains associated with aging, many seniors begin developing problems remembering or being able to focus. Scientists and health professionals are beginning to see how seniors can benefit from music therapy. It may be something you want to consider to help seniors in your life.

What exactly is music therapy? Music therapy is an activity in which a qualified person uses music, whether listening or learning to play, as a means to bring about positive changes in a person’s cognitive, physical, psychological, or social functioning.

The ultimate goal of music therapy is to improve a patient’s or client’s quality of life. This is done through encouraging them to participate and interact with others taking music therapy, by providing individual treatment, and by influencing their well-being.

How can music therapy benefit seniors? The therapist uses music therapy to address a myriad of personal goals. These include developing musical skill in the client, enabling them to change their behavior, allowing them to express emotion and expect a resolution to them, as well as providing a sense of connectedness, comfort, and personal affirmation.

Music therapy can also be used to reduce stress and encourage relaxation, give structure to exercise and movement, and enhance personal relationships and social skills. Finally, music therapy is beneficial because music reinforces learning, improves focus, and improves a person’s self-esteem.

Music therapy easily captures your attention and it’s no different for those with diminished mental capacity due to illness or injury. In fact, music stimulates many parts of the brain, which can be extremely beneficial for those with dementia. Music can be used no matter what a person’s ability or disability. It is an effective memory aid and encourages movement. Music taps into our memories and plucks on our heart strings.

Making music together, no matter which instrument is being used, allows those taking music therapy classes to relax and enjoy themselves. Because it evokes emotion and brings back memories, even if a person is merely listening you can see the smile appear on their face.

Music therapy may include singing together, playing instruments, improvising, moving to the rhythm of the music, or simply listening. You can find music therapy sessions being offered in rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, day care treatment centers, mental health centers, and psychiatric hospitals. Some correctional facilities, hospice programs, and private practices also use music therapy to benefit their clients and patients.

Conditions which can be improved by using music therapy include but are not limited to:

* Alzheimer’s disease
* Brain injuries
* Developmental disabilities
* Phantom limb pain
* Paralysis to an arm or leg following a stroke

As you can see, there are many benefits to using music therapy with seniors. Once treatment has begun, you can expect to see improvements in their ability to maintain focus, pay attention to detail, and maybe even in their ability to remain stable on their feet. All-in-all, music therapy has so much potential it’s no wonder the medical community is beginning to use it to treat seniors.

Doctors have long known the healing sound of music. Therapeutic drumming, on the other hand, is a relatively new way to tap into the body’s healing ability. When you think about it, though, why shouldn’t the body respond to drumming? The first sounds ever heard are those of a mother’s heartbeat while still in the womb.

Nearly every culture in the world has some type of drumming. It can be seen in ceremonies and rituals, and some cultures use drumming during rites of passage. Drumming has also been used extensively in music, to guide dancers, and as a means to celebrate.

In recent years people in the medical profession have started realizing the importance of using a holistic approach to healing. Many physicians are using drumming therapy with senior citizens in co-ordination with otherwise traditional means of healing.

Why drumming therapy? It could be partially due to the fact that drumming reaches down into a person’s psyche to touch patients in a non-verbal way. Drumming therapy is being used with people of all ages. From patients as young as four to those as old as 104, drumming therapy has many benefits. Some of the benefits of drumming therapy include:

* Drumming has been proven to reduce anxiety and depression in patients over the age of 80. A study also noted the increased self-esteem of the patients following their weekly drumming session.

* During one study on drumming therapy, participants had blood samples drawn before and after a one-hour drumming session. Doctors found a marked decrease in the hormonal stress response and an increase in activity of natural killer cells.

* Alzheimer’s patients have been shown to respond favorably to drumming therapy. They are able to connect better with their loved ones as a result. Therapeutic drumming can also increase their cognitive ability.

* For patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease or stroke, moving can be difficult. Therapeutic drumming, when done with deliberate slow, steady rhythms, enabled these patients to move more steadily.

Medical studies have also proven that drumming can greatly increase the production of T-Cells which are responsible for building the immune system. It accelerates physical healing and gives those in therapy a sense of wellbeing and being a part of something larger than themselves.

Some other research has shown the effect of drumming therapy to produce deep relaxation. It lowers blood pressure, and reduces stress, as well as aiding patients in overcoming chronic pain. Drumming has also been found to release negative feelings which can remove emotional blockages.

Therapeutic drumming can be done by an individual, but research has proven the added benefits of drumming with others. Therapeutic drumming is the sound of healing music; it will continue to be studied and new benefits are likely to be found.
Do you have a loved one you feel could benefit from this form of therapy? You may want to discuss this option with your loved one’s doctor.

Visualization techniques have been demonstrated to improve physical and mental health, speed the healing process, and effectively manage pain. They can also help prevent illness, reduce stress, and increase an individual’s overall health and well-being.

Different visualization techniques can be used in the treatment of stress, and stress related illness. For general Stress Management, begin by identifying where in the body you feel the stress. Do you have muscle tension in the back and neck? Is your stomach “knotted”? Do you experience a dull or throbbing headache? Different people experience stress in different ways.

Once you have identified where in the body you experience stress you can use visualization techniques to reduce the stress, as well as the physical symptoms and effects you experience while under stress.

One useful visualization technique involves placing your hand over the affected area of your body. Breathe deeply, with your eyes closed. Feel your heart rate slow to a calm and steady pace.

Visualize the stress in your mind as an image, with size shape and form. It may appear as a black ball which is located in the area of your body that you feel stress.

It may also appear in another form, such as a square, circle, rectangle etc… As you concentrate on the image of the stress (which may or may not be accompanied by physical pain) visualize (or picture yourself) moving the image.

It may not happen right away, but keep working at it, until you can get the image to move. Even the smallest movement is an accomplishment. As you begin to be able to move the image, be aware that you have control of it, and more importantly, know that IT does not have control over you.

Visualize the image that symbolizes your stress moving further and further away from its original location, until eventually you are able to remove it completely from your body.

Another technique along this same line is to visualize the stress you are feeling, and imagine that it is getting smaller, and smaller. Eventually the image will shrink to a tiny spot, and then disappear all together. This technique is very powerful in helping to manage the physical symptoms that result from stress.

Besides heart and digestive problems, stress can contribute to overall muscle aches, stiffness and even pain.

Relaxation techniques can help manage the affects of stress on the body as well as the mind. There are various techniques one can use to experience a state of relaxation and calmness, which require little time or effort on the part of the individual seeking to benefit from them.

Here is one relaxation technique that many people have found beneficial in managing the level of stress they experience.

Stair Step Relaxation Technique

Begin with a series of deep, cleansing breaths. Feel your body relax, as you slowly breath in and out. It can be helpful to imagine the tension and stress leaving your body as you exhale, while peace and calm fill you, as you inhale clean, fresh air.

Once you have done this for a period of two to three minutes, begin to experience the tension leaving your muscles, one at a time.

Once you are ready, picture yourself at the top of a flight of 10 stairs. Take one step down this set of stairs, and imagine that your body, your mind, and your spirit feel more relaxed, and more at ease as you reach this step. Say the number “One” as you descend.

With each succeeding step you can experience a deeper and deeper state of calm and relaxation. As you descend upon each step say the corresponding number of the step you are on.

When you reach 10, which is at the bottom of this set of steps, you will be entirely calm and relaxed. Any problems or worries you had will have vanished, and you will feel totally at peace.

Once you have experienced this state for a moment or two, you will be ready to come back up the set of stairs. With each step that you climb, you will become a little more awake and alert to your surroundings.

Your body and mind will remain at calm and at peace even after you return to the final step. You will feel renewed energy, and a renewed sense of purpose and joy, as you return to the top of the stairs.

This is a simple progressive relaxation exercise that can help with insomnia sufferers. You can either practice this by yourself, or have someone else read it to you. If you have someone else read it to you, make sure that they keep a low, even and relaxed voice tone.

Induction Begins

Lay down or sit in a comfortable position. Make sure that your legs and arms are uncrossed. If you are lying down place your arms by your side. If you are sitting, place your feet on the floor and your arms laying on your lap or on the armrests.

Now, go ahead and take a deep deep breath. Hold that breath for the mental count of three. As you allow the breath to leave your lungs, let your consciousness slide down the center line of your body. You may close your eyes now if you haven’t done so already. Know that your unconscious is making the necessary connection to allow you to become completely relaxed. Know that as you go into trance, you are always in total control and if you need to come back to reality for any reason, you only have to say in your mind the number one and move your fingers.

As you go deep into trance now, your mind can drift into a dreamy, drowsy state, right on the threshold of sleep. On the threshold all you will need to see, hear and experience will come to your unconscious mind. Notice how your body has already become more relaxed than at the beginning of this process. Every outside sound and noise will increase your ability to focus on your relaxation and you will go deeper and deeper into trance. You will begin a process of systematically relaxing you body, as you count from 1 to 10, you will relax your body from feet to head.

1- Relax your feet and ankles. Feel them turning off and becoming limp.

2- Relax your calves. Allow them to become heavy…so heavy.

3- Move the relaxation through your knees and into your thighs. Feel your thigh become so relaxed, so loose, so heavy.

4- Relax your hips and allow them to sink in. Notice now how very relaxed and very heavy your legs are. They are so heavy that you don’t want to move them anymore.

5- Move the relaxation into your abdomen now. Feel it go through you, into you and relax all the internal organs, relax your back, relax your abdominals.

6- Relax your chest now. Relax your heart and lung. Feel how deep and steady your breathing is now. Notice how your heartbeat has slowed down to allow you to become fully relaxed.

7- Move the relaxation into you shoulders and upper back now. Down into the arms, through your elbows and forearms and into you hand. Allow your hands to become so relaxed, notice how all your fingers are relaxing.

8- Move the relaxation up through your neck and into your face. Let all the small muscles around your mouth, nose and eyes to become completely loose now. Feel you forehead relaxing now. Notice how your eyelids have become so heavy that you couldn’t even open them if you tried in vain.

9- Relax your scalp now. Feel it becoming smooth… so very relaxed.

10- Let the relaxation move into your brain now. Relax your brain and allow it to become so very loose. Allow your consciousness to move about freely.

Every time you go through this process, it will become easier and easier and you will go deeper into trance than the time before. Every time you hear you count from 1 to 10, you will naturally drift into and easy and comfortable trance like the one you are in now. Every time you want to return to this state, you only have to repeat the trigger “10″. Every time you repeat the trigger “10″ you will come back to this nice relax state of trance.

Now you can begin a process of deepening your trance. Know that there is no limit to how deep you can go. With every breath you take, you will go deeper and deeper inside yourself. With every easy beat of your heart, your unconscious is coming to the surface of your being. Your subconscious is close enough to listen closely to what you have to tell it. This is so because you deeply desire to acquire this ability to become lucid now. Deep inside your mind, there is a special place very near to the essence of who you are. This special place is a place where everything is true. A place where you can store this and other information that you deeply desire.

At this point, you can either stay in this wonderful relaxed state for as long as you want, you can choose to communicate with your subconscious, you can let yourself slip into sleep or you can come back to normality and notice how relaxed you are now.

This progressive relaxation technique is great to help alleviate sleeping problem.

The art of self-hypnosis often gets dismissed as being “new age.” However, just like nearly everything in life, if you truly believe in yourself and the practice, it can prove to be very helpful.

What Is Self-Hypnosis?

Self-hypnosis is a form of hypnosis that you can perform on yourself. It certainly comes in handy because you won’t need anyone else to help you receive the many benefits of hypnosis. Self-hypnosis is now a large part of modern hypnotherapy.

How Can Self-Hypnosis Help?

The uses for self-hypnosis are nearly endless. If you have a problem that you wish to resolve, chances are, self-hypnosis can help you find your solution. Self-hypnosis can obliterate the obstacles that keep you from achieving your goals.

Here are some of the challenges that self-hypnosis can help you solve:

•	Smoking and other addictions
•	Personal development
•	Stress management
•	Problem solving
•	Pain management, including chronic pain or the pain of childbirth or surgery

When you practice self-hypnosis, you can get yourself through pretty much any of life’s challenges!

Practicing Self-Hypnosis

The image of hypnosis that you have in mind right now is probably the image of a person holding a pocket watch counting backwards while saying, “you’re getting sleeeeepy.” Sorry, but that’s only in the cartoons!

Hypnosis isn’t about tricking people or forcing them to fall asleep, it’s simply a state of deep relaxation that can be achieved, even through self-hypnosis.

The truth is, self-hypnosis is similar to meditation. Meditation, however, has more of a focus on finding your breath and staying in the moment, while self-hypnosis takes things further in order for you to solve one specific issue.

A self-hypnosis session will typically last from 15 minutes to 1 hour. It’s flexible so you can find a session length that works well for you.

Imagery In Self-Hypnosis

One way that self-hypnosis differs from meditation is in its use of imagery. If your goal is relaxation, you can imagine yourself in a place that you find relaxing. It could be an actual place that you’ve been to, or a place in your mind that you’ve always dreamed of.

Using Affirmations

Self-hypnosis often makes use of affirmations. Affirmations are short positive statements, like mantras, that you repeat to yourself several times a day. The most important characteristics of a good affirmation are the following:

•	Spoken in first person
•	Spoken in the present tense
•	Spoken with a positive tone

For example, if you were using affirmations for childbirth, you might say, “I am having a calm birth,” even if you haven’t entered active labor yet. The purpose is to train your mind to think of the situation in a positive light, which helps to build confidence and comfort.

Affirmations are more powerful than you think, which is why they’re useful in self-hypnosis.

Scripts and CDs

Using the help of scripts and CDs, anyone can enjoy the benefits of self-hypnosis. They’re popular choices because they’ll allow you to gain the benefits of music, affirmations, and imagery without having to plan those steps out yourself. They guide you through the entire session.

When you’re ready to try self-hypnosis, remember that there aren’t any strict rules. As long as you can gain some time to yourself and close your eyes and relax, you can explore the world of self-hypnosis.
