Candle Meditation Exercise

The “Candle meditation” is a simple exercise that will make the quiet the mind and bring peace and relaxation.

Visualizing light in your meditation is a very powerful way of using its special qualities. Light can be very energizing and healing. The flickering flame of a candle gives the mind something to focus on. This helps you to quiet the inner thoughts of your mind and helps to improve your concentration skills.

Candle Meditation Exercise :

For the candle meditation exercise you will need a quiet and dark room where you will light a candle. Use the color white or cream color. The color blue would also be nice, because this color is associated with peace and relaxation. Sit cross-legged or get in a kneeling posture. Pick whichever position is comfortable for you. Place the lit candle in front of you.

Relax and breathe naturally focusing your gaze on the flame of the candle. Empty your mind of all thoughts and only concentrate on the flame feeling like you are travelling through it with endless peace. When you feel that you have retained it in your mind’s eye, close your eyes and you will see the afterglow. At first the afterglow will fade and you will be left with nothing, so you will need to open your eyes again and repeat the process. Eventually you will have a mental image of the candle from the afterglow and should be able to retain it for some minutes.

When you achieve this level of concentration now lose yourself again by looking directly in the flame. Gaze softly at the flame and allow your eyes to blink when necessary. Whenever your mind tries to sidetrack with other thoughts, go back to gently concentrating on the flame again.

Keep this exercise for as long as is comfortable, and then gradually close down the meditation.

Just as sitting by a fireplace is peaceful, it is very relaxing to do the candle meditation.
