Color Therapy During Stress Management

Association of Stress and Colors

Stress has become interwoven into people’s lives that most have accepted it as a natural part of life. Meanwhile, for some others, it has become somewhat of an epidemic. There are several reasons why people develop stress and while you cannot control where it is coming from, you can always exhibit proper stress management techniques to combat their effects in your life.

Recent research studies have shown the link between personality traits and impact of stress in one’s life. This has prompted researchers to look into what other factors could affect the way people view stress in their life. A new color system is just one of the results to this ongoing research effort. But how true is it that color can actually impact your ability to cope with stress more effectively?

Color Therapy

The idea of using color as a stress management technique is indeed new and offers a more interesting approach in battling stress in one’s life. Indeed, the little choices of color that must would refer to as trivial can actually impact your ability to handle or cope with stress.

This is not just a myth since this claim has been well supported with scientific evidence and study. Color therapy though is not yet officially accepted as a legitimate approach to stress management but is still largely considered as a complementary or alternative approach to healing. One reason for this is that colors affect your five basic senses to deliver a holistic impact to one’s health condition. Therefore, you need to choose the colors you surround yourself with thoroughly to facilitate in enjoying stress relief results.

Calming Effects of Color

Different colors have been known to produce an overall calming effect due to its ability to elicit psychological and emotional responses in the body. There are several colors there are but for this purpose, you will learn about the impact of basic colors when it comes to your personal stress management efforts:

*Red – This color creates a stimulating and exciting effect into your system, which is therefore not recommended if you are looking to achieve effective stress management. However, it is ideal for awakening if you had recently suffered from an emotional slump.

*Blue – This color is known to create a calming and soothing effect such that it is ideal for use in stress management. Surround yourself with this color to facilitate in creating a cooling and calming effect to both mind and body.

*Green – This color inspires a restful experience such that it is really effective in overcoming anxiety as you can enjoy more emotional harmony.

*Yellow – This color inspires a cheerful and sunny attitude, such that it is recommended for stress relief due to its ability to put you into a positive state.

*White – This color symbolizes clarity, and that is a particular quality that you need to have or develop in times of stress.

*Orange – This one too, like red, is not ideal for relieving stress and must therefore be avoided. On the other hand, it helps to provide a burst of energy whenever you are feeling down.

Final Recommendations

Now that you know what the different meanings of color is, you can now make a better choice about which colors to surround yourself with (and which colors to avoid) if you want to enjoy benefits of proper stress management. Whether it be in your choice of clothes, or in the prevailing colors of your surroundings, it is important to know that you can now have control over these elements and use them to your advantage.

Stress Management Techniques for Seniors

Stress is something nearly everyone has to deal with. You may not be able to do much about the things stressing you, but can you do something to help the senior citizens in your life? What stress management techniques for seniors can you pass along to help them?

Even though most seniors already know it, you may want to help them remember that managing stress is simply taking charge of the things in your life that you can control. This may mean managing a schedule that seems to have gotten out of control. It could also mean being sure to strive for balance in life rather than letting life run you ragged.

Help them identify what the stressors are in their life. Are they concerned about having enough money to live off of in their golden years? Can you go with them to speak with a financial advisor? They may be able to subdue some of the fears which are causing so much stress.

Are the seniors in your life stressed about their health? Go with them to their next doctor’s appointment and discuss their concerns with the doctor. They will likely be able to address those concerns or recommend they visit a specialist who can better help them. Their doctor may suggest they spend time with a psychologist to help them deal with the stressors they experience.

Suggest they take yoga classes to help them manage their stress. Yoga will teach them to improve their posture, learn to breathe properly, and may help them become more limber. Another benefit to learning yoga is that it helps the body relax, which means they’ll learn to manage the stress they feel.

Meditation is another stress management technique seniors may want to try. Once they learn to meditate, they will find their heart rate slows, their blood pressure lowers, and they’ll be taking in more oxygen. All of these things lead seniors to manage their stress in a more effective way.

Have you always liked to put together jigsaw puzzles? There’s something very relaxing about putting puzzles together. They can concentrate on the puzzle alone which may make the stress seniors feel less of a problem.

Suggest they stay away from people who cause them stress. Perhaps they have a neighbor that bothers them and wants to borrow tools all the time. They can learn to say ‘no’ when a request is made, or simply refuse to answer the door. If they’re able to avoid the stressor they won’t be affected by it.

They may want to downsize their home. Even though your parents may have lived in the same home their entire married life, if they’re in a two-story home and neither can climb stairs very well, it might be time to move to a one-floor home. The thoughts of moving may cause stress, especially if they have years of accumulated things, but they may feel a sense of freedom once they’re in a new, smaller home.

No one wants to be affected by stress, particularly when they’re supposed to be headed to their golden years. There are many stress management techniques for seniors to try. Encourage them to try several methods until they find the one that’s best for them.

Managing stress

In today’s hectic life, stress is a very common feature, which most people experience. Stress is not a bad factor; it is the way in which our body handles the external pressure, which leads to some psychological reactions. Managing stress is very important in such a case. Stress can never be done away with, but benefits of positive stress should be realized. Stress is a vital necessity, but in most cases, it is much above the optimal limit. Some techniques to manage stress are given below:

1. Deep breathing: Deep breathing is a common method of reducing stress level and can be done at any instant. Deep breathing means breathing from the diaphragm, which helps calm down the mind, and have full control over your breath. Take full and conscious breaths rather than shallow breaths. This will ensure that adequate oxygen is delivered to the brain for proper functioning, and this in turn reduced anxiety and tension, and therefore, stress. It is recommended to practice deep breathing daily, prior to going to bed. Practicing it regularly at bedtime will reap positive benefits during the day. You can feel the movement of your abdomen when you deep breathe.

2. Meditation: Meditation involves focusing on a simple object to aid the relaxation of your mind. Meditation has the advantage that it aids focusing minutely on whatsoever you might be considering. By concentrating on a simple thing, it helps your mind to move away from stress for that period of time, which shows later on. Meditation can be very useful when you experience high levels of tension or depression. When you focus on a given object continuously, it helps your brain to control your emotions and deal with them in a proper manner. Meditation can be performed by placing yourself in a very comfortable position, and listening to some soothing music to calm down your mind. Ten minutes into the meditation process, you will feel the change in your emotions. [Read more...]
